Downeast is looking for an individual with solid traditional accounting skills that can go beyond accurate reporting to provide meaningful operational insights. The ideal candidate for this position will need to be independent while working in a well-supported collaborative environment. The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment is a must.
This is a full-time position. General schedule is 8am-5pm Monday - Friday in the office.
Responsibilities and Duties 
  • All financial controller responsibilities, overseeing the development and implementation of best-in-class company-wide accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls consistent US GAAP. 
  • Direct the daily activities and administration of various assigned accounting functions.
  • Advanced QuickBooks knowledge.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Manage assigned aspects of the company’s transactional accounting and monthly close processes, which may include billing, accounts payable, general ledger, fixed assets, account reconciliations, major accrual and estimation processes, and financial analytics.
  • Manage lease, CAMs and other expenses for Downeast retail locations
  • Oversee sales tax tracking, reconciliation and payment by state
  • Prepare monthly financial statements in accordance with corporate policies and procedures, and GAAP.
  • Ensure that established policies, procedures, workflows, controls and other key items are appropriately documented.
  • Responsible for achieving departmental efficiency and effectiveness, and having a focus on continuous improvement, through ongoing workflow analyses and process improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with the business unit operational teams in support of strategic initiatives by providing timely, accurate, relevant, and actionable financial information.
  • Work closely with internal and external auditors in support of operational, financial, compliance, risk and/or client audits.
  • Assist on special projects, as directed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications and Skills 
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with 4-6 years of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CPA preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and standard accounting systems, practices, and procedures 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to present professionally to all levels of operational and executive leadership
  • Ability to successfully and timely manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced work environment 
  • Strong attention to detail, and process, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communicator
